After a long weekend of Thanksgiving leftovers followed by a frantic search for Black Friday bargains, we find ourselves heading into the holidays feeling rather stressed and unfocused. With just a few weeks until Christmas and a rapidly dwindling supply of ready cash and spare time, a friend suggested joining the blissed-out regulars who practice early morning yoga on Third Street Beach. There are no membership fees, no sign up sheets, just a willingness to share the morning practice with some friendly bendy locals!
A daily offshoot of Synergy Center for Yoga and Healing Arts, yoga on the beach takes your traditional practice to new heights as the wind, waves and rustling palms fill the space in your head that’s usually clattering with the day’s to do list. Heather Morgan, Ana Maria Velazquez, Pom Cayeiro and Gabriella Meszaros take turns leading the classes each morning at 7am. Participants bring along a mat or towel, some water and an open mind. Classes are held near the iconic lifeguard stand just past the green space at 3 Street and Ocean Drive. While classes are free, your donation of $5 is the teacher’s only compensation. A second round of classes ends the busy day at 5pm.[youtube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VtkB_zbxpo]
Synergy Yoga also holds regular classes at their Espanola Way studio but the outdoor practice remains one of the most popular offerings. With classes in Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Budokon and even prenatal yoga, the center offers a variety of approaches to the mind and body art form. With flexible schedules, a broad variety of styles and a roster of the area’s best teachers, Synergy provides one of South Beach’s most immersive atmospheres to discover the benefits of this ancient discipline.
Facing a holiday of too much food and drink and way too many family obligations, a morning of quiet meditation watching the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean helps us reconnect with the real spirit of the season…
